Building Christian Leaders
At Concordia High School, we believe athletics is more than just competition. It’s an opportunity to develop Godly character, deepen your faith in Christ, and become the person God created you to be.
That’s why the Cardinal Athletics Department lives by the BUILD process: a four-step journey of growth that shapes not just great athletes, but spiritually grounded leaders.
Here at CHS, we believe in developing the whole person: spirit, mind, and body. That’s why we offer a variety of athletic opportunities where our student-athletes can put BUILD into action and grow in discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
The BUILD Process
1. Blueprint – Clarify Your Calling
Before a structure goes up, a blueprint must be drawn. In the same way, our student-athletes are called to prayerfully discover who God is calling them to be. This step is about setting Christ-centered goals, becoming aware of the gifts God has given you, and seeking His direction in every area of your life.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
- Proverbs 3:5-6
We encourage each athlete to begin with the end in mind - not just wins and scholarships, but a life that glorifies God and impacts others.
2. Dig – Remove What Hinders
Before we build upward, we dig deep. Spiritually, this means surrendering sin, distractions, and selfish habits that keep us from becoming who God wants us to be. In this stage, we focus on developing Christ-like habits through accountability, discipline, and grace-filled growth.
We emphasize four biblical habits:
Accountability – Living with integrity before God and others
Commitment – Saying “yes” to God’s calling, even when it’s hard
Discipline – Choosing what honors God over what feels good
Effort – Giving your best for the Lord in every moment
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for man.”
- Colossians 3:23
3. Lay the Foundation – Build on the Rock
In this stage, athletes are challenged to build their lives on Jesus, the solid rock. That means developing spiritual disciplines like prayer, Scripture study, worship, and service. Success that’s built on hype or talent alone won’t last, but a foundation built on Christ will stand through anything.
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
- Matthew 7:24-25This is where identity is formed: not in performance, but in Christ alone.
4. One Brick at a Time – Walk Faithfully Each Day
Discipleship isn’t a one-time decision: it’s daily. This step is about learning to be faithful in the small things, trusting that God is doing a bigger work than we can see. One brick at a time. One prayer at a time. One rep, one choice, one step closer to Christ.
We coach our athletes to live with eternal purpose, knowing that each brick laid in obedience to God builds a legacy that honors Him.
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
- Galatians 6:9
